Streaming Economics
Streaming generates substantial revenue for the music industry overall. The distribution of that revenue is the issue. The per-stream rates paid to rights holders average fractions of a cent. Meaningful streaming income requires tens of millions of streams annually — a bar that only a small fraction of working musicians reach.
The Major Label Model
Three major labels — Universal, Sony, Warner — control approximately 70% of commercial recorded music globally. They provide distribution, marketing, and advance financing in exchange for rights ownership. The model hasn't fundamentally changed since the record business began, despite every technological disruption.
What Independent Looks Like Now
Independent artists have never had more tools for production, distribution, and audience building. They've also never faced more noise competition. The successful independent model in 2026: direct fan relationships, live performance as primary income, recorded music as marketing, and ruthless focus on a specific audience.
